Morris Bailey and Dennis Gomes are liable for saving Resorts Casino Hotel from financial disaster, but that doesn’t mean that the 2 business owners are being saluted by everybody. A rally was hung on Thursday to protest the reduced wages that Resorts is paying their longtime employees.When Gomes and Bailey took over, Resorts was on its way down and was in desperate need of an injection of life. Gomes so long as life by renovating and reinvigorating the casino resort. After decades of the usual scenery at Resorts, Gomes brought in a prohibition era theme.Cocktail waitresses suddenly needed to audition for his or her jobs in new, racier, outfits than that they had worn in years past. The waitresses that didn’t make the general cut within the uniforms, were offered jobs in other areas of the casino. That didn’t please one of the waitresses who filed a category action suit against Resorts and their hiring practices.Thursday, union workers marched to voice their displeasure with the salary cuts happening at Resorts. Many casino workers were told they’d must reapply for his or her jobs when Morris and Gomes took over. In the event that they were rehired, many had their hourly pay slashed. Jobs that were paying almost $15 an hour had suddenly dropped to under $10 an hour.”It’s so difficult,” Jean Stewart, a twenty year Resorts employee, told the click of Atlantic City. “The savings that I had now goes towards paying my bills. There is not any such thing as savings now.” Stewart saw her hourly rate go from $14.17, to $9.51.Other casinos have made similar pay cuts amidst the worst recession in decades. The 2008 recession has caused double digit declines in monthly revenue at AC casinos, causing the casinos to scale back their staff. Those who didn’t lose their jobs in the past couple of years, have needed to maintain a decrease in pay.The union workers that marched on Thursday caught some heat besides. Thursday was the beginning of the Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival. Caesars Entertainment Corp. was a few of the most vocal critics of Local 54, claiming the march was held on the wrong time. Two sisters are headed to court in Connecticut with differing story’s of an agreement that was in place regarding gambling winnings. One sister won a Powerball lottery jackpot of $500,000, and the opposite sister believes she is owed half the money.Theresa Sokaitis has sued her sister, Rose Bakaysa, for her half the winnings. Sokaitis claims that the 2 sisters had a written agreement that they’d split any gambling winnings.Within a few years of the agreement, the 2 had a falling out. The agreement was signed in 2004, and after the falling out, Sokaitis learned of her sisters success. She went on the lookout for her share of the winnings, and was told that no money could be exchanging hands.At that time Sokaitis filed the suit. Originally, a judge dismissed the case given that Connecticut law makes gambling contracts illegal. The Supreme Court, however, ruled that since the winnings came from a legal type of betting, the lottery, that the case can continue.On Tuesday, Sokaitis testified in regards to the written agreement within the morning, and Bakaysa was set to offer her side of the tale within the afternoon. At stake for both women is $250,000.Although she is looking for her share of the jackpot winnings, Sokaitis stopped in need of accusing her sister of completely disowning the family.
